OUR JOURNEY

50 Years of Inspiring Young Minds

1975 – 2026

Celebrating a proud legacy of learning and achievement.

From a small school founded in 1975 to a thriving educational community today, Kottawa North Dharmapala Vidyalaya has remained committed to academic excellence, character development, and holistic education. Empowering generations of students through knowledge, discipline, and values, we continue to build a brighter future for Sri Lanka.

Located at the current Vidyala Junction, previously famously known as Tabaruma / Tavern Junction, the school commenced with 34 students after the land called “Delgahawatta”, which belonged to Mr. Carolis Mudalali, was acquired by the government and Kottawa North Dharmapala Vidyalaya was constructed there.

Consisting of a small 20×20 feet covered room and three 20×70 feet walled open classrooms, the school was equipped with 20 children’s tables, 1 teacher’s table, 40 children’s chairs, and 1 teacher’s chair. Its first principal, who also served as the teacher, was Mr. G. A. Anandawardhana. In the same year, Mrs. S. Abeyesiri Gunawardhana and Mrs. Gunawathi Egodage joined the academic staff.

In 1976, the second building was constructed with the participation and contribution of parents and teachers. In 1975, the number of classes increased to 4, and the teaching staff grew to five members.

The first sports meet was held on July 24, 1975, under the patronage of Mr. Chandra Gunasekara.

From 1978 to date, the school has continued to achieve high results in both the Grade 5 Scholarship examination and the G.C.E. (O/L) examination.

Following a proposal moved and approved by the Parent-Teacher Association, Tabaruma (Tavern) Junction was officially renamed “Vidyala Junction”.
