1974 – The Beginning
This school was started at the auspicious time of 9:05 AM on January 15, 1974, after the land named “Delgahawatta,” which belonged to Carolis Mudalali at Vidyala Junction, was acquired by the government.
The first student was enrolled by Mr. Chandra Gunasekera, who represented the Kottawa area as a member of the State Council at that time. On that day, 34 students were enrolled. The first principal was Mr. G. T. Anandawardhana.
Within about two decades, the school gradually grew rich in both physical and human resources. The nearby post office junction was later changed to “Vidyala Junction.”
2009 – Scholarship Excellence
In 2009, the school produced the island’s 3rd place student in the Grade 5 Scholarship Examination, marking a proud national achievement.
2012 – English Medium Education
After 2012, English medium classes were gradually introduced from Grade 6 onwards, expanding academic opportunities for students.
2018 – Outstanding Results
According to the 2018 scholarship examination results, the school produced the island’s 4th place student with 196 marks.
According to the 2018 G.C.E. (O/L) results, the school achieved an 89% qualification rate for Advanced Level, with students obtaining distinction passes for all subjects.
2019 – Growth & Zone Achievement
In 2019, the school produced 44 scholarship passes, including a student who scored 197 marks.
The school also received a three-storey building in 2019, which helped reduce the long-standing shortage of physical resources.
According to the 2019 scholarship results, 53 students passed above the cut-off mark, enabling the school to secure 1st place in the Sri Jayawardenepura Zone.
2020 – Advanced Level Commerce Stream
In 2020, G.C.E. Advanced Level classes were commenced under the Commerce stream, opening a new pathway toward higher education.
Breaking New Ground in G.C.E. A/L
2023 – First University Selections
For the very first time since the commencement of G.C.E. Advanced Level classes, two exceptional students were officially selected to enter university.
From humble beginnings at Vidyala Junction in 1974, the school steadily grew in strength, spirit and academic excellence. With the Commerce stream introduced in 2020 and a remarkable 67% university-application eligibility rate in 2022, the year 2023 became a golden year in school history.
This achievement reflects the dedication of pioneering students, the guidance of teachers, and the support of the school administration, parents and community.
2025 – Continuing University Success
In the G.C.E. Advanced Level 2025 examination, another two remarkable students were selected to enter prestigious universities in Sri Lanka.
This repeated success proves that university selection is no longer only a rare dream, but a standard achieved through hard work, discipline and determination.
These students proudly carry the flag of the school into the highest academic arenas of the country.
